What to Wear on a Margaret River Wine Tour

Dressing right makes your Margaret River wine tour far more enjoyable. Here’s a simple, season-by-season guide to staying comfortable across cellar doors, caves, forests and the coast.

Comfort First

A good tour keeps you moving — between cellar doors, along the Busselton Jetty, into a cool limestone cave and beneath the karri trees of Boranup Forest. Prioritise comfortable, flat footwear you can walk in all day, and easy layers you can add or remove as the temperature shifts. Leave the heels at home.

Season by Season

Margaret River’s maritime climate means conditions can change through the day, so dress for the season:

  • Summer (Dec–Feb): Light, breathable clothing, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. A light layer for breezy coastal stops.
  • Autumn (Mar–May): Mild and settled — layers you can peel back as the day warms.
  • Winter (Jun–Aug): Warm layers and a light, waterproof rain jacket. Cellar doors are cosy, but the coast can be cold and wild.
  • Spring (Sep–Nov): Layers for changeable conditions, plus a jacket for fresh mornings — ideal for wildflower walks.

Smart-Casual Works

Cellar doors here are relaxed and welcoming — there’s no need to dress up. Smart-casual and comfortable is perfect, whether that’s jeans and a nice top or a simple dress with a cardigan.

A Few Practical Tips

Beyond the basics, a couple of small choices make the day smoother. Avoid strong perfume or aftershave — it interferes with your ability (and your neighbours’) to smell the wine properly, which is most of the tasting experience. Choose layers you can easily slip on and off, since you’ll move from a sunny vineyard to a cool cave to a breezy clifftop in the space of an hour. And if you’re prone to feeling the cold, the limestone caves stay mild but the coast can be sharp, so a light jacket earns its place in any season.

Don’t Forget

Bring a small day bag for water, sunscreen and a camera, and leave a little room for the bottles you’ll want to take home. Comfortable, closed-in shoes are worth repeating — you’ll thank yourself on the cave steps and forest paths. For a complete checklist, see our guide on what to pack for a Margaret River wine tour.
