Margaret River for Food Lovers: A Gourmet Guide

Margaret River isn’t just a wine region — it’s one of Australia’s great food destinations, where the same cool climate that grows world-class grapes also produces exceptional cheese, seafood, chocolate and produce.

Farm-Fresh Produce

Rich soils, clean air and a reliable maritime climate make the South West a natural larder. Local growers turn out superb fruit and vegetables, cold-pressed olive oil, raw honey and free-range eggs, much of it sold at roadside farm gates and providores where you can taste before you buy. Black truffles are even hunted with dogs in the cooler south during winter — a genuine luxury that appears on the region’s best menus alongside seasonal berries, stone fruit and avocados grown just up the road.

Cheese and Dairy

Lush pastures make for outstanding dairy, and Margaret River’s artisan cheesemakers are a genuine regional highlight. Expect creamy bries and camemberts, farmhouse cheddars, washed-rind varieties and tangy blues — and a cheese-factory visit sits perfectly alongside the cellar doors on our tour. Dive deeper in our guide to the region’s artisan cheese.

Land and Sea

The region’s proteins are something special. Freshwater marron — a prized local crayfish — appears grilled or poached, alongside farmed venison, grass-fed beef and fresh-caught seafood from the surrounding waters. Paired with a local red or crisp SSB, they show off the region’s paddock-to-plate philosophy at its best.

Long Lunches Among the Vines

The region’s restaurants and cellar-door kitchens are destinations in their own right, many built around a paddock-to-plate philosophy that puts local produce front and centre. A long, leisurely lunch overlooking the vineyards — matched glass by glass to the estate’s own wines — is one of the great pleasures of a Margaret River visit, and a highlight of our tour. It’s slow food in the truest sense: no rushing, just good ingredients, skilled cooking and the right wine alongside.

Sweet Treats and a Drink

No gourmet tour is complete without dessert. The famous Margaret River Chocolate Company offers free tastings, while bean-to-bar makers, boutique bakeries and single-origin coffee roasters keep the sweet tooth happy. Craft breweries and boutique gin distilleries round out the region’s artisan credentials — more on that in our guide to chocolate, coffee and craft.
