The Best Margaret River Wines to Take Home

One of the great pleasures of a Margaret River wine tour is taking a few favourites home. Here’s what to look for at the cellar door so every bottle earns its place in your suitcase.

Age-Worthy Cabernet Sauvignon

If you buy one wine to cellar, make it Margaret River Cabernet — particularly from the founding heartland of Wilyabrup. The region’s gravelly soils and maritime climate produce structured, elegant reds with blackcurrant, cedar and fine tannins that reward a decade or more of patience. Learn what makes it special in our guide to Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon.

Benchmark Chardonnay

Margaret River Chardonnay is regarded as some of the finest in the world — think citrus, white peach and beautifully judged oak, with a freshness the cool climate protects. A bottle or two is always a good call, and it drinks well young or with a few years’ age.

The Region’s House White: SSB

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon — the crisp, zesty white blend known locally as SSB — is Margaret River’s everyday hero. Affordable, food-friendly and instantly refreshing, it’s perfect for drinking over the coming summer rather than cellaring.

Something You Can’t Get Elsewhere

Keep an eye out for small-batch and cellar-door-only releases: single-vineyard reds, wild-ferment whites, fortifieds and experimental blends that never make it to the shops. These limited bottles make the most memorable souvenirs.

Getting It Home Safely

A little planning protects your haul. Leave room in your luggage and wrap bottles in clothing, or ask cellar doors for protective sleeves and sturdy cartons — most are well set up for travellers. If you’re flying, checked baggage is fine for wine (it can’t go in carry-on), and many wineries will arrange freight to your home if you’d rather not carry it. Buying a mixed six-pack often unlocks a discount, too.

Ask Your Guide

Our local guides taste through the region constantly and know the standout drops at every cellar door — from the sleeper bargains to the trophy wines and cellar-door-only releases. Don’t be shy about asking; a good tip can turn a nice bottle into an unforgettable one, and save you money on the wines that genuinely punch above their price.
