Wilyabrup — The Heartland
Home to many founding estates, Wilyabrup is celebrated for structured, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon — the wines that first put the region on the world map. Its gravelly soils and gentle slopes are considered the classic Margaret River terroir.
Yallingup & the North
Cooler and coastal, the northern end around Yallingup and Dunsborough produces vibrant whites and elegant reds, with world-class surf beaches and dramatic granite headlands nearby. It’s where wine country meets the ocean, and home to some of the region’s larger, well-known cellar doors.
Wallcliffe & the Central River
Around the Margaret River mouth, the Wallcliffe sub-region enjoys strong maritime influence, producing refined Chardonnay and the region’s famous Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends (SSB). This is also cave and forest country.
Karridale & the South
The cooler southern end, closer to Cape Leeuwin, is known for crisp, aromatic whites and sparkling wines. The maritime chill here rewards patient growers with real elegance.
Caves, Forest and Coast Between the Vines
What makes touring these sub-regions so rewarding is how much sits between the cellar doors. The Wallcliffe and southern areas hide the great show caves — Lake, Mammoth and Jewel — while the Boranup karri forest and the two-ocean meeting point at Cape Leeuwin are never far away. You can taste a benchmark Cabernet and stand in a limestone cathedral within the same morning.
The Grape Varieties That Define Each Area
Across these sub-regions, a few varieties do the heavy lifting. Cabernet Sauvignon (often blended with Merlot in the Bordeaux style) is king in Wilyabrup; Chardonnay flourishes in the central belt around Wallcliffe; and the crisp Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blend, known locally as SSB, is the region’s easy-drinking signature white. Cooler southern sites near Karridale also turn out fine sparkling and aromatic whites.
