Booked onto a Margaret River wine tour? A little preparation goes a long way. Here’s how to pack so you’re comfortable across wineries, forests and coast.
Dress in Layers
Margaret River’s maritime climate means temperatures can shift noticeably through the day, especially as you move between breezy coastal spots, shady karri forest and sunny vineyards. Comfortable layers you can add or shed are your friend year-round, even in summer, when a cool sea breeze often arrives in the afternoon. A light scarf or cardigan is easy to stash and endlessly handy.
Comfortable Footwear
You’ll be walking across gravel cellar-door car parks, along the Busselton Jetty and perhaps into a cool cave or two. Flat, closed, comfortable shoes beat heels every time — cave boardwalks and forest tracks are no place for a slippery sole. Caves in particular can be damp underfoot, so a bit of grip helps.
The Essentials
- A light rain jacket (especially in winter and spring)
- Sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen for summer sun
- A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated between tastings
- A camera or phone for the coastal, forest and vineyard views
- A light jumper for cave visits, which stay cool year-round
- Room in your bag — you’ll likely take home a bottle or three
Seasonal Tips
Visiting in spring? Pack for wildflower walks and the odd shower. Coming in summer? Prioritise sun protection and swimmers for a beach stop. Winter travellers should bring a warmer layer for cosy cellar doors and cool forest air. See our guide to the best time of year for what to expect each season.
What You Can Leave Behind
There’s no need to lug maps, cooler bags or a designated-driver’s disappointment. You won’t need to pack lunches, book cellar doors or plan routes either — it’s all sorted. A small daypack for water, sunscreen and your camera is plenty for each day out.
