The History of Margaret River Wine

Margaret River’s rise from quiet farmland to a world-class wine region is one of the great stories in Australian wine — and it happened in barely half a century.

A Bold Prediction

In the mid-1960s, agronomist Dr John Gladstones studied the region’s climate and soils and concluded that Margaret River was ideally suited to premium wine, drawing comparisons with Bordeaux. His research gave a handful of pioneers the confidence to plant vines in what was then cattle and dairy country.

The Founding Estates

The first commercial vineyards took root between 1967 and the early 1970s, many of them in the Wilyabrup area that remains the region’s heartland today. Founding estates such as Vasse Felix, Moss Wood and Cullen were established by doctors and farmers who backed Gladstones’ theory. Within a decade their wines were winning national acclaim.

Why the Climate Works

Margaret River sits on a narrow strip between two oceans, giving it a mild maritime climate with warm days, cool nights and reliable winter rainfall. Gravelly, free-draining soils suit Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay in particular — the varieties that made the region famous. The consistent conditions produce remarkably even vintages, one reason the wines earned trust so quickly.

Meet the Land’s First People

Long before the vines, this country belonged to the Wadandi people, the traditional custodians of the South West, whose connection to the land, caves and coast stretches back tens of thousands of years. Many local names and stories reflect that deep heritage, and a good guide will share this history alongside the wine, giving the region’s recent success a much longer backdrop.

From Pioneers to Global Icon

Through the 1980s and 1990s the region added Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends and refined Shiraz to its repertoire, and boutique family estates multiplied. What was a scattering of vineyards is now home to more than 200 producers, yet the region has kept its small-batch, quality-first character rather than chasing volume.

World Recognition

Today Margaret River produces roughly a fifth of Australia’s premium wine while accounting for only a few per cent of the national crush — a telling sign of its quality focus. In just over 50 years it has earned a place among the world’s most respected wine regions, and its founding estates remain benchmarks.
