A Global Biodiversity Hotspot
WA’s South West is one of only around three dozen recognised global biodiversity hotspots, home to thousands of wildflower species — a great many of which grow nowhere else on Earth. The isolation and ancient soils of the region have produced an extraordinary concentration of endemic plants.
What You’ll See
From delicate native orchids and vivid red-and-green kangaroo paw to carpets of everlasting daisies and banksia in full bloom, the variety is astonishing. Watch for donkey orchids, cowslip orchids, native wisteria and the flowering peppermint and marri that draw honeyeaters and native bees.
Where to See Them
The Boranup karri forest floor, coastal heath near Cape Leeuwin, and roadside reserves along the way all put on a show. Many blooms appear right alongside the vineyards, so a wildflower walk pairs naturally with a day of tastings.
More Than Just Flowers
Spring brings the whole landscape to life. As the wildflowers open, native honeyeaters, wrens and the occasional kangaroo appear among them, and whales are still tracking up the coast. The mild days and long light make it ideal walking weather, so spring is arguably the most rewarding season to combine nature with the cellar doors.
Tips for Spotting Them
The best displays reward slow, close looking — many of the loveliest orchids are only a few centimetres tall and easy to walk past. Morning light is ideal for photos, mild days encourage the blooms to open, and a good local guide knows exactly which reserves and forest tracks are flowering that week. Please stay on paths and leave the flowers for the next visitor; picking is prohibited.
Best Time to Visit
Spring — roughly September to November — is peak wildflower season, though some species begin as early as August and others linger into December.
